THE RETURN OF MYSTIKAL?
On January 14, 2010, hip-hop artist Mystikal was released from the Louisiana prison system. There are very few rap/hip-hop artists that I like, but the rare guys that are good are really good, and Mystikal was one of them. Mystikal does not really sing, he just kind of yells at the microphone. His songs all concern one topic: pussy and what he intends to do with it. The raps are so over the top that they cannot be taken seriously. The two songs that the uninitiated might recognize are Shake Ya' Ass, the radio friendly version of which was Shake Yourself, and Danger (Been so Long). The musical formula is simple: a James Brown influenced beat, he shouts at the microphone a lot, and there are some female background singers. The lyrical formula is, well, I have already told you that. Nonetheless, the stuff is really infectious. It has been 10 years since Mystikal had a #1 hit. He committed a heinous crime (sexual battery and extortion), but let's hope he can turn things around and make more music that's so bad it's good.
